Nancy Sanchez is a compelling musical talent whose time is now. The singer-songwriter displays her gifted vocals and distinct lyricism on Ruby in L.A., the recording artist's full-length debut release. Noted as a jazz musician, Sanchez, who makes her home in Orange County, is ready to cross-over to the realm of pop through the album's 13 tracks. She has always made space in her jazz sets for solo acoustic performances. Now Sanchez is primed to chart a new musical identity born from them.

With the effort, the singer is keenly focused on her growth as a songwriter. "I am at my most creative when I tell a story through lyrics and melodies," she says. Sanchez's musical interests and influences include artists such as Joni Mitchell, Regina Spektor, Feist, Paul Simon and Billy Joel. Their imprint is certainly felt as she chronicles the travails of relationships on Ruby in L.A. detailing the bittersweet experiences of a young woman falling in and out of love.

"This album is a timeline depicting a series of experiences and emotions in my life," the singer adds. "As I journey through this musical path I find myself in love songs, breakup songs and hippos." Her quirky, conversational lyrics create a space for storytelling that is inviting, intimate and vulnerable, even on "The Hippo Song," her signature, reggae-flavored tale of a love 'just around the corner.'

Sanchez's debut album is co-produced by David J. Carpenter and Evan Stone. It features collaborations with Tony Guerrero on trumpet and Greg Leisz, who has recorded with Joni Mitchell among others, on steel guitar. When producer Dave Way signed onto Ruby in L.A. the three-time Grammy award winner lent his talents to applying the final touches mixing and mastering its offerings. Based in Los Angeles, he has worked with notable singer-songwriters the likes of Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow and Shakira.

Where Nancy Sanchez's self-titled EP in 2010 featured a number of jazz standards, she branches out in Ruby in L.A. with all new compositions. Musically, the effort is anchored in pop but has hints of other genres ranging from country, hip-hop, ragtime, jazz and Latin. Beat boxing intermingles with scat singing while acoustic guitars strum alongside melodious saxophone solos. "I feel so lucky that I get to mix and match different styles of music," she says. "As a Latina, I have the best of both worlds."

The musical cross-over is a reflection of Sanchez's own life. Born in Toluca, Mexico, she immigrated to the United States with her family as a young girl. One of the first songs Sanchez remembers penning was "La Bandera de los Estados Unidos" about the U.S. flag during their two-day bus trip to San Diego. Growing up, Sanchez spent her formative years in Anaheim involving herself with a local Mariachi academy that honed her skills. Later, she discovered the world of Jazz, a genre she would fall in love and distinguish herself with performing monthly at Steamer's Jazz Club in Fullerton.

Sanchez is a three-time Orange County Music Award winner taking home honors for Best Latin and Best Jazz. Her music has received airplay on KKJZ, KSBR and KPFK radio. She has been interviewed and featured in the pages of the OC Weekly, Orange County Register and La Opinión just to name a few.

ESL vol 3 Mexican American Concierto Series
BYOB Beer and Wine Picnic Under The Hollywood Stars
    featuring Mariachicanos de Los Angeles
Along With Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar
    Ballet Folklorico de Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA – Pata De Perro Producciones with Eastside Luv are proud to present a Mexican-American concert at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre on Saturday Aug 20, 2016 at 8pm with tickets starting at $25, $15 for students and children. Discounts are available for large groups. More ticket info at FordTheatres.org.

The concert will feature the debut of Mariachicanos de Los Angeles singing American/European hits from the ‘50s to present day, Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuellar singing traditional mariachi hits, and Ballet Folklórico de Los Angeles dancing both traditional & modern. Bring your own picnic, beer & wine!

English as a Second Language is a concept developed by East Los Angeles native, Guillermo Uribe, to describe the expression of our pocho/chicano existence through music and dance. Ironically for some Mexican Americans, español has become their second language. There are so many variations of the pocho, with some being more connected to their American side and others more to their Mexican side. And sometimes, both of these sides come out beautifully in a single song or dance.

    About the Artists

Mariachicanos de Los Angeles was formed by Pata de Perro Producciones, whose home base is Eastside Luv, located at Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights, CA. Pata de Perro’s mission is to explore the love of English music and the love of Mexican Mariachi music. The group consists of an all-star group of traditional mariachi musicians who were all born and raised in the U.S.A. The band will cover songs by such artists as Radiohead, Kenny Rogers, The Cars, Freddie Fender, Van Morrison, Metallica, David Bowie, Velvet Underground, Sia, James Brown, and Oingo Boingo, to name a few. Ballet Folklórico will add traditional to modern dance elements. The music will be arranged by Jaime Cuellar of Mariachi Garibaldi and Stephanie Amaro de Abad. The group will also feature special guest singers from popular L.A.-based bands.

Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuellar has delighted audiences with dynamic musicianship and lively stage presence for the past twenty years. Founded in 1994 by Jaime Cuellar, Mariachi Garibaldi began as a privately run community youth group with members between the ages of 10 and 15. Over the years, Mariachi Garibaldi has evolved into a premier mariachi ensemble in California. Garibaldi has accompanied various well-known artists such as Yolanda del Rio, Pablo Montero, Mecedes Castro, Humberto Herrera, Beatriz Adriana, Alejandro Fernandez and Juan Gabriel, among many more. They have shared the stage with mariachi ensembles and artists such as Mariachi Los Campers de Nati Cano and Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan, and Mariachi Imperial de Mexico. Jaime “El Pollo” Cuellar is a composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, multi-Grammy winner and nominee. Mr. Cuellar was the violin, guitarron, vihuela, guitar, and guitarra de glope performer for Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano for over ten years. He has accompanied Latin recording artists: Yolanda del Rio, Mercedes Castro, Humberto Herrera, Lila Downs, Vikki Carr, Aida Cuevas, Linda Ronstadt, Eugenia Leon, Alejandro Fernandez, Beatriz Adriana, Pablo Montero, Jose Feliciano and more. Jimmy has recorded on various productions including the 2010 release of Ry Cooder and The Chieftains, San Patricio. His honors and awards include: Featured artist on the 2005 Grammy Award-winning album, cELLAration: A Tribute to Ella Jenkins; the 2006 Grammy Nominated album “Best Mexican Album,” Llegaron Los Campers: Concert Favorites of Nati Cano’s Mariachi Los Campers; the 2008 Grammy Award-winning album for “Best Mexican Album,” Cien Por Ciento Mexicano by Pepe Aguilar; and the 2009 Grammy Award “Best Regional Mexican Album” Amor, Dolor, y Lagrimas. Mr. Cuellar received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the California State University, Long Beach Bob Cole Conservatory of Music in 2009

Ballet Folklórico de Los Angeles was founded in 2011 by Kareli Montoya. Though young, the dance company has already distinguished itself as the nation's premier Mexican folk dance company. They have performed in world-class venues such as the Nokia Theater, Greek Theater, John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, Santa Barbara Bowl, Valley Performing Arts Center and the Staples Center. The dance company has been accompanied by various mariachi bands including Grammy Award-Winning Mariachi Los Camperos, Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan, world-famous Mariachi Vargas and Mariachi Divas. Ballet Folklórico de Los Angeles has shared the stage with celebrities such as Lila Downs, Beatriz Adriana, Paquita la del Barrio and Armenian pop star Lilit Hovhannisyan. This amazing dance troop is the first folklórico company in the country to accompany a Symphony; the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra and the Marina del Rey Symphony orchestra, both conducted by Frank Fetta.
